The domain of technical systems and its characteristics can be specialized further into multiple subdomains. For that different approaches can be used. At first, some subdomains have been identified with the systems purpose in mind which is to process either information, energy, matter, or combinations thereof. In order to understand how the system works, the aspect of the process being applied is relevant. A more systems theoretical approach is given by a reducing the level of detail by treating the system as a black-box. In order to characterize the domain, the inputs and outputs at the system border are to be classified. Also the classic PPR modeling approach may be used to identify different subdomains. Accordingly, the process and resource subdomains have been specified. The product domain is defined as another top-level domain next to the technical system domain.
